Mountain biking: Bring your own bicycle, cycle gear, snacks and drinks. If you seek river adventures, the Kakamas region is perfect for river rafting, as the town is situated on the banks of the biggest river in South Africa, the mighty Orange River. This is definitely a must-do in Kakamas, either if you are a beginner or are already comfortable on skis. A Springbok Slalom Skier will teach you everything there is to learn about waterskiing. The best way to experience what Kakamas is all about is through a vineyard tour and wine tasting experience at one of the first private wine cellars in the Northern Cape. Afterwards you can sit back, relax and taste the wines Kakamas are famous for. When the grapes are ready to be harvested, the majority of harvests are sent off to the Orange River Wine Cellar. Established in 1974, this is one of the biggest wine co-operatives in the world. The cellar produces wines and grape juice for local and international markets. Cellar tours and wine tastings can be done on prior arrangement. A Variety of Farmstalls with local produce will enrich your trip. Stop over at The Pienk Padstal for local arts and crafts, dried fruit and souvenirs, Dessert Raison Farmstall is on your way to the Augrabies Falls where local wine, dried fruit and hand-made produce can be purchased. Situated in the midst of this mountain desert wilderness and the mighty Orange River, with beautiful rock formations created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, lies Riemvasmaak, a small community on the banks of the Orange River. Nestled in the mountains you will find the Riemvasmaak Hot Springs, with warm water produced from the earth. Based on an Egyptian temple design, the Transformer Building holds a small piece of important history from Kakamas when the town itself was a church-run colony back in The Transformer building was erected in 1914, as the first hydro-electric power station in South Africa. Nowadays, it doubles as the Kakamas museum and an information centre. The Mill was erected in 1912 and was used for the processing of wheat. Later years, when vineyard growth grew and wheat growth took down, the mill was used for the production of dry dog food etc. After renovations in 2006, it became The Mill Centre, housing local businesses, including the Green Kalahari Wine Deli with its wide variety of wines from the area. After the farmers dug out the canal system running through Kakamas with hand tools in 1898, a problem occurred with the irrigation to higher grounds. A few waterwheels are still in use today in the canals running through vineyards along the main road in the town. A memorial was erected in 1960 and is a popular tourist attraction.
